It is a sedative and will put you to sleep, but other medicines containing benzodiazepines are used in its place now.

actually the correct name is phernobarbital and it is used as a sedative hypnotic and as a convulsive if you think it in general it is used to sleep people but not in a good way for example you shouldn't take ti yourself for sleeping better or stuff because it is a depressant and it can have further consequences

Yes Phenobarbital is used to help you sleep but it is also used to treat different types of epilepsy.Phenobarbital is habit forming and should be used exactly as your doctor prescribed for you.This medication should be used with extreme caution if you have a history of depression or a history of drug abuse.
