Is it safe to fill out online job applications?

Most of the time, it's not clear what the company is or who is collecting the information.

If it is not clear to you who the company is then your best bet would be to avoid filling out that application. Only fill out applications from companies you want to work for by visiting the company url directly or by signing up with a reputable job source site.

It is sometimes safe to fill out an online job application online only if you do not have to put your social security number on it. Most companies do not ask for this information unless you have been invited for an interview.

It is safe to fill out online job applications. However, I would not be handing out my personal information to companies that I don't know anything about. If your feeling uncomfortable, perhaps you should do some research on the business your applying for a position to. Also, you could use websites that weed out scams like Career Builder.

Each internet browser has a way to see if the transmission is secure. It's not a bad idea to not disclose your social security information when submitting an application, and explain why. But overall, it's going to be really hard to find a job if you don't submit online applications, as this is the preferred method for most companies nowadays.
