Is it safe to feed warm blooded horses alfalfa?

Answer by  cnjtraining (51)

It is okay as long as they are not fed too much which could cause colic or founder. It could also make them hotter than another horse fed alfalfa.

You should NEVER give your horse Alfalfa as it's only hay source. Alfalfa is extremely hard to digest and should only be given as a treat. It's the same as a human eating a candy bar. You can give your horse Alfalfa but only give him a flake a week.

Yes, but it can be too rich in calcium for some older horses. Make sure they also have access to grass and to oats.

Alfalfa is a wonderful feed for most horses- but feed in moderation. It is rich and has very concentrated nutrients, that can cause harm when fed too much. Be very careful with young growing horses. Can cause working horses to have a bit more energy and be harder to handle.
