Is it safe to eat popcorn kernals?

I always eat the left over popcorn kernals and my mom says I should not, that it will hurt my teeth.

A general rule of thumb is to remember that mom's know best. Unpopped popcorn is like eating little rocks. It may not damage your teeth but the potential is there.

That is not a good thing to eat, popcorn kernals and ice are terrible on your teeth. They are to hard for your teeth to hold up to.

It is not very safe to eat them. Your mom is right biting or crunching down on corn kernels could cause hairline cracks in your teeth.

The kernals could probably break your enamel on your teeth. This is somewhat like the dentist telling you not to bite anything that's too hard. I think I would listen to mom.

Yep. Just happened to me. Had to go to the dentist today to have an emergency tooth extraction because it broke horizontally under the gumline, after accidentally biting down on a popcorn kernal. Now I'm looking at a couple thousand dollars for an implant. :'(

In my experience, the decision to eat unpopped popcorn kernels is one that should not be taken lightly. Due to the hardness of the kernel and the amount of chewing forces that can be exerted, the likelihood of tooth fracure can be relatively high.

You should not eat the unpopped kernals. They are hard and can possibly fracture or break a tooth. Same thing goes for chewing on ice, anything that you bite down on that is hard, is subjecting your teeth to possible breakage.
