Is it safe to drink a hot drink from a plastic mug?

It depends on the type of plastic. If you're talking soft, disposable plastic, it's a bad idea, as the plastic can melt. Hard plastic, however, is doable.

It is safe if the mug is insulated type of plastic. Examples would be a plastic thermos, or an insulated cups with a lid you can buy at gas stations.

It depends how hot it is. The actual drinking of the liquid will be as safe as it would be from any container. The mug itself is likely to get quite hot though as plastic is a good conductor. Use a mug with a handle and you should be fine.

to my second-hand knowledge(from a public health professional), and without having thouroughly reserched this myself, plastic and food (especially hot food) should not mix as the plastic can release nasty chemicals into your food/beverage which can cause allergies and cancer. Also, plastic contributes significanlty to the degradation of the environment.

Yes, it is perfectly safe to drink something hot from a plastic mug. However, unless the mug specifically states that it is microwave safe, you should avoid warming it in the microwave.
