Yes it is possible. What I've been doing to avoid the problem is I have put one to two inches of rock/gravel in the pot before adding the soil and the plant. This will give the additional drainage that your tomato plants need.

It is possible to overwater plants that are in a container. For tomatoes, the soil should be moist but not saturated, with good drainage. You should also ensure that your tomatoes get plenty of sun.

Tomato plants normally have tender roots and it has only a limited capacity of withstanding water stagnation so it is better not to over water tomato plants as the roots may be rotten due to excess watering than the required level. It is also to be noted tomato plants have to be watered daily but not over water.

It is certainly possible to over water tomato plants in containers. The most important thing in purchasing a patio pot is ample drainage. It is also important not to block the drainage holes in the pot. A layer of pebbles, rocks or broken clay flower pots on the bottom of your container keeps the tomato roots out of the water.
