Is it possible for my heat pump to freeze over one day and then run fine after that?

It is normal for your heat pump to frost over once or twice a day during the heating season. An indication that there is something wrong, would be that the ice does not completely clear off. Normally the heat pump should only ice up below 40 degrees outside temperature.

Yes, this is certainly possible. If you pump has just been recently used then it actually should freeze over just about once and then start working fine over the next few days.
