Using a steam mop on hardwood floors is a bad idea. The steam may penetrate the gaps between the boards, and allow them to absorb the water. Once they absorb this water, they may swell and buckle, which will likely be irreversible damage.

Wood is a natural product and will expand and contract depending on the mosture content of the floor itself. The introduction of moisture is never a reccomended cleaning technique.

Steam mops can be used on hardwood floors. Read the instructions for the particular steam mop, but provided the floors are finished or coated,a steam mop can be used.

I steam mop will leave too much moisture on the floor causing it to buckle. If you have real wood floors only use a damp mop with vinegar.

I believe that it is very important to use a mop that will clean hardwood floors. It doesn't matter if it's a steam mop or not, as long as it's a mop, I'm sure that it will take the dirt away.
