Yes - I just had a temporary dental crown removed and the smell was awful! As they are only temporary they don't fit perfectly. My dentist said it was normal for there to be a smell.... unfortunately.

Yes it is normal to have a smell and discomfort at the crownline. It is not the crown that smells, it is the tooth that may be decaying or rotting.

Yes, it is perfectly normal for a temporary dental crown to smell. Most likely it is not the crown that smells but rather the tooth.

I work for a dentist and when a patient comes in because their crown has fallen off the dentist will drill out the old cement, there is no existing decay or toothe in the crown, but when he does this it smells really bad. is it leaking bad margins?

The tooth is actually what may smell bad because it gets ground away to remove the decay. The crown itself may not smell bad.
