I have a Lhasa Apso mix breed and as her hair grows out it changes from a very light tan color to a dark tan. The longer it grows the darker it gets. I keep it cut at 1/2 - 3/4 quarters of an inch but sometimes during the winter I let it grow to 3 inches.

Color changing should not occur in a dog (sometimes in puppies as they grow into their true coat, but not in grown dogs). A change in color or hair loss is typically indicative of an illness in a dog. The graying is a natural process though - just as it is with aging people.
