A regulation size basketball could be discouraging to a child, seeing that they will be unable to get their hands around it. Most Middle School leagues use less than regulation size balls, and your child should be able to pick up the most important fundamentals of basketball better with a ball that size.

A regulation basketball is way too big for a child's hands. Basketballs should be geared towards certain ages, and a regulation sized ball should not be used until old enough.

A small child should use a smaller basketball for a specified period of time. They can get used to dribbling and moving with the ball. Then move onto regulation size
