As the disease does not have its own obvious symptoms and is slow to progress it can be difficult to diagnose. This is most common in middle-aged women.

Hashiomoto disease is diagnosed by a blood test. It is an autoimmune disease of the thyroid. There is no cure but most often it is controlled by thyroid medication. Most affected are females.
