Colazal (Balsalazide) is used to treat ulcerative colitis. It is an anti-inflammatory drug used to reduce inflammation in the bowel. In the body the drug is converted into mesalamine which reduces diarrhea, rectal bleeding, stomach pain and inflammation.

Colazal, or balsalazide, is one of the many drugs used to treat inflammatory bowel conditions including both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. It is useful in relieving the inflammation in the colon. Since it has some of the same chemical make-up as aspirin, the same precautions that apply to aspirin would apply to it as well.
