Is a Kwanaa Kinara sort of like a Hanukkah Menorah?

How many candles go into it?

The Kinara looks very much like a Menorah, although it only has seven candles. However, its purpose is not religious, and do not represent a historical event like the candles in a menorah do. They instead represent the principles of Kwanzaa.

An actual "Menorah", which was lit in the Temple has 7 candles. We have Menorah's but, we don't light them because there is no temple. What we light at Channukah is a Channukia and it has 8 candles plus the shumash which is the "servant" candle.

They are similar in that each hold candles. However, there are differing amounts of candles representing different things. The Menorah holds 8 candles representing the 8 days of Hanukkah. The Kinara holds 7 candles, representing the values of Kwanzaa.
