Yes, Merriam-Webster are a very highly regarded dictionary publisher and that dictionary should be more than sufficient for any of his needs. In addition, the school library will have dictionaries available as well as online dictionaries.

This version is electronic as opposed to printed on paper. The upside is that it's light, portable and easily updated. On the other hand, it's much more expensive than the print version and the book won't ever run out of batteries.

Yes, it will work, but most dictionaries are available online nowadays. I would look at other writing resources that you might pick up instead of a dictionary because that info is available free on a lot of sites, unless your son absolutely has his heart set on a dictionary.
