Is a cheap laptop a good investment?

I don't want to have to replace it within a year.

A cheap laptop is not really a good investment as chances are they will break down early, be very slow, have bad graphics and have low memory. So buying a more expensive one is a good idea.

in short, if you will use your laptop to work (frequent use, many travelling requirements, etc) I will not recomend it, cause cheap laptop ussually have less MTBF (mean time before failure) due to cheaper part. If your laptop will be used to handle light works (just working at the office, doing yout homework), its OK

If you can live with low performance because all you do is websurfing and office stuff it can be. Don't expect HD video to run smoothly.

It depends. If you are looking to just surf the web or work processing it's probably fine. If you plan to play games or do graphics processing you'll be sorry.
