Xanax is in a category of medications called Benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines can slow the metabolism, and thus cause constipation and hardening of stool.

Xanax is generally used for panic and anxiety attacks. Side effects can include constipation and a stool softener could be taken since there are no known drug interactions. However, in some patients with irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea, a doctor should be consulted before taking a stool softener.

Xanax is a medication used for anti anxiety. It has a calming affect but it does not slow down your digestion tract. If you drink plenty of water and have a healthy diet there is no need for a stool softner.

Xanax can have a side effect of constipation. If one is prone to constipation then taking a stool softener would prevent the constipation side effect. One could also increase fluid intake and fiber intake also. Be more aware that drowsiness is a more frequent side effect when first started.
