"Sneakers" are athletic shoes, with rubber soles and leather or canvas uppers. They are called sneakers because they allow the wearer to walk quietly and "sneak up" on people. The film "Sneakers" is about a computer hacking caper, and has nothing to do with the shoes.

Most commonly refering to the footwear. The term was first used in the 1880's for tennis shoes for boys because of the rubber soles that made them less squeaky.

A sneaker is an athletic shoe, called trainers in British English. The origin of the term refers to the fact that the rubber soles were quiet and allowed "sneaking about."
