I want to join the U.S. Navy but have a fructose malabsorption. Is that a problem?

I'm not sure how to handle this.

In general this should not cause an issue as long as it is well controlled without medication or special diet. Check with your local recruitment agent to verify your eligibility.

While fructose malabsorption is not itself a disqualifying factor, it can exhibit itself as irritable bowel syndrome, which would disqualify you from service. Ask your doctor about a medical waiver.

This shouldn't be a daily problem. You just need to make sure you regulate your diet per your doctors instructions. However, if you are in the field or on a mission, carefully regulate what goes in your body!

It is a disorder not unlike Irritable Bowel Syndrome. There is no known cure but a suitable diet would help. Avoid apples, pears and watermelons with a high fructose content. Bananas are fine but not raisins, honey and corn syrup. It is not to be confused with Hereditary Fructose Intolerance (HFI)which is a potentially fatal condition.
