I bought for my west-facing windows. Every time the sun starts to beat on the blinds, there is a plastic smell. Is this harmful?

It depends on material. If your windows are built from plain PVC it could be health hazard. Look at product declaration and ask your salesman or product manufacturer.

If the smell on the blinds is strong, and the blinds are new, it may be helpful to use an ammonia based cleaner on them such as windex, to remove any coating that is on them from manufacturing. If the blinds are older, they may be coated with an older mixture that creates harmless odors.

The plastic smell is not harmful, most likely it is form oil from when they manufactured the plastic. An easy way to get rid of the smell is to spray the blinds with a non caustic cleaner such as lysol or Mr. Clean. Wipe gently so you don't damage the blinds, and you should notice the smell has gone away.

from what i know about windows and having worked in a window factory this is not harmful. most likely what you are smelling is a dust resistant coating that was placed on the blinds. this should go away over time
