It would depend on the type of surgery and for what purpose. In general, telltale signs include pain, redness, swelling, and unusual warmth at the site of the incision. At worst any tingling, numbness, loss of use of a body part are good indicators something is not correct. If there is any drainage or oozing these are signs as well.

I would go to another doctor and ask for a second opinion. Tell the doctor that you feel somethings wrong. Tell your local doctor. See diffrent doctors and get their opinion. No one can help you unless you see out answers. Do your own research and find out how you should be feeling after surgery compared to what you feel.

Spinal surgery does have it's risks and rewards but if you feel that you are not getting straight answers from your surgeon get a second opinion. You need to be sure that your healing time is normal. You may have to call your insurance company to get it approved but a second exam and opinion is important.

If you are in more pain that your doctor said you would be you should call your doctor and have him take a look.
