The most important thing to understand when shooting off roman candles is the range that these can fire over, and what could happen in the event that it does not go off right. Roman Candles can shoot about a hundred yards, so be sure you are pointing it at a clear area and with nothing flammable in the immediate area.

Only shoot them over water or over a large concrete or paved area, far from any trees or grass or buildings. Wear eye protection.

First, and most importantly, read the instructions on the firework! If it is safe to hold the candle, fire away from any other persons and hold away from own body.

You should aim the roman candles at a 120 degree angle pointing it away from trees and anything within a 150 foot area. Hold the roman candle until 5 to 10 seconds after it stops firing just to be certain there is no more "flares" other than that, have fun!
