First jack the car to be able to dis-engage the shift rods from the levers. Insert a nail through the holes in the shift levers. Move to neutral and then adjust the shift rod ends to fit into the shift levers with no resistance. Replace the cotter pin.

The easiest way is to put the shift selector in Neutral and make sure it's there, solidly. Loosen the adjust nut at the transmission and move the arm back and forth to get a feel for the internal parts. Move the arm to the neutral position and tighten the nut. Test for proper fit.
