Prune each branch back to a junction, where needed. Remove all small shoots from the inside of the tree, and all dead branches. Only prune the branches that need to be pruned, as some dogwoods do not respond well to pruning. Try not prune before June 15 or after the end of August.

Prune out any dead, any "sucker" growth, and when you find that two branches are touching or rubbing then prune out the smaller of the two.
