For one arm push-ups form is everything. First, spread your legs about shoulder width and make sure to keep balance. When you extend downward make sure your elbow does not go above you shoulder at the verticle angle. For best results, don't actually lock your elbow when rising up for this allows more tension on your muslces.

Make sure you can do a normal push-up first! Then when you are ready try to balance yourself on the one hand by putting it in the middle of your body instead of to one side

Make sure you have plenty of calcium because some people get hurt trying it, but start by doing push-ups with your hands close to your center, working them in, and slowly rely on one arm more until you can do one are push-ups.

One-armed push ups are about balance. Find a position where you can maintain your balance throughout the move and there you are.
