Leave 6 to 12 inches if there are no local building codes that require a specific distance. Depending on the the type of fence, you can have the fence attached to the house, but the post nearest to the house should not be touching.

The local laws should always be researched prior to constructing a fence. After this is determined a good rule of thumb is to permit enough space for an individual to pass comfortably. You may want to consider leaving enough room for the use of a ladder in the event of future home repairs.

Your local municipality may have bylaws setting out a minimum gap between house and fence. You should check with city hall. If there is no bylaw, it's logical to allow enough room for a person to walk comfortably down the gap and put a ladder up for household repairs.

The most important thing is to check your local laws. There are laws as to how tall a fence can be, how close to the house, etc. If you have a homeowners organization, check with them too. A good rule is to leave space for an individual to pass comfortably.
