It can actually add more value than hardwood or tile. With carpet you also have a broader spending spectrum. You only need the carpet to look good for a while, so don't splurge. The lighter the better, makes everything look bigger.

Not very much but it's a good thing to do, because the house will look much more new, clean and taken care of to the potential customer and he will perceive that as one less thing he needs to take care of if he finally decides to buy your house.

You get a high return so wait right until you put it up for sale so it looks new and is counted as a new item.

It depends on the cost of the carpet and how bad the current carpet is. You might consider renting a carpet cleaner, or having it done. It will be cheaper.

Replacing the carpets is probably not a very necessary investment. If it does increase the value of your home, it will only increase it by what you paid for the new carpets. You should let the new buyer handle the new carpets so they are installed to his/her personal liking.

It depends on the current condition of the old carpet. If the old carpet is dirty, then it could add half of the price you payed for the new carpet.
