Question by  chelsea (20)

How many pounds of meat should I purchase per person?

I am having a football party, and I don't know how much meat to buy. I don't want to not have enough, but I don't want to buy more than I need. I am not used to cooking for crowds.

Tough question. If you're putting meat in something (like chili), 1/4 pound. On it's own (like hamburgers) 1/3 to 1/2 pound.

The best way is to add up the weight of all the people likely to be present and divide by 200 to give you the number of lbs of meat needed.

The amount of meat depends largely on what you are cooking. Normally 1/4 lb. of meat per person is a rule. Some people will eat more and some, of course, less. It also depends upon how much other food you are planning to serve.

It depends on what kind of meat you are cooking, I would plan on about 2 burgers/hot dogs/brats per person. You can always cook and freeze the leftovers.
