There are different kinds of pneumonia. Bacterial pneumonia can be cleared within two to four weeks with antibiotic treatment. Viral pneumonia may take four to six weeks to resolve. The mortality rate is about 5% in the elderly.

The severity of pneumonia and the overall health of the patient will influence recovery time. With good response to antibiotics, an adult patient may feel better in a few days.

Pneumonia can be caused by several different organisms. Depending on which organism it is your pneumonia can last any where from several days to around three weeks. You will probably be coughing for much longer than that though. Generally what people know as full on pneumonia will last more like two or three weeks.

Pneumonia can last anywhere from 5 days to months- it depends on the severity of the pneumonia. The amount of fluid that has built up in your lungs is an indicator of the length of the illness.
