The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second, and the average distance of the earth from the sun--longer axis more, shorter axis less--is 93,000,000 miles. Arithmetic tells us that the travel time of light from the sun is 500 sec., give or take, depending on the position of Earth on its orbital path--500 seconds or 8 min, 20 sec.

Light from the sun takes lightyears to reach the earth. Since it takes so long to get here, we actually would have no way to tell when it would stop.

Since the distance from the sun varies in its relativity to the earth at any given time in its orbit, the time it takes to hit the earth varies as well. However, it takes approximately eight minutes. You can't predict when the light is going to stop.

Simple. The distance of the sun from the earth is 149 million kilometers. The speed of light is 299 792 458 m/s.Distance divided by time do the math :)
