Usually within the first 10 minutes of birth. You may have to help your new mom out and use a knife, especially if this is her first litter.

Usually they will do it right away if mom is really tired she may wait a bit before she takes care of it but she cant wait like an hour to do it you will lose the puppies if she does. Trust her Mother Nature will tell her what to do and how to do it.

This should not take long at all. In fact, should be done within minutes. If it isn't done within 15 minutes, cut it yourself or see your vet.

The mother should begin cleaning the pup and removing the membrane from its face first, then she will move on to the umbilical cord.

Dogs will chew the umbilical cord shortly after birth. If yours still hasn't you need to tie it off at two places and cut with sterile scissors or knife.
