Modern Drunkard Magazine (I am not kidding) explains that Jack Daniels Black label is better quality, pricier and is 86 proof. The pedestrian Green Label is 80 proof. Up until 2004, Black Label was 90 proof and Green Label was 86. In 2004, the company said that its customers preferred the lower proof, hence the change.

Green label means it's not as ripe, only aged half as long as black label. Not quite a knock-off brand, but an attempt to have a Jack Daniels for the financially challenged times.

As far as I can tell this is supposed to be a more mellow and aromatic blend then the black label Jack Daniels. It is taken from barrels lower in the storage facility of where the whiskey is aged in the barrels. This means it was aged at a cooler temperature making it lighter and less sweet tasting.
