The terminology "saved" in Christianity refers to an escape from the wrath of God in just punishment for sin. This escape from punishment is effected through personal faith in the vicarious atonement of Jesus Christ. For example, look in the Bible at Romans 5:9

First, a person has to understand that because of their personal sin, they can't have peace with God. Second, they have to accept that Jesus is the only one who can forgive their sins. Finally, they must confess and repent of their sins before putting Jesus first in their life.
