Different schools have different methods for calculating GPA of previous coursework for the purposes of admissions, credit transfer, etc. There is no single method.

Letters are assigned a number. An A is worth 4, a B is worth 3, a C is worth 2, and a D is worth 1. You then total up these numbers and divide by 4. So if you have 5 total classes and receive 4 A's and one C, your GPA is 3. 6.
