Insulin a hormone is naturally produced in the pancreas. Insulin production is regulated by the amount of glucose, or sugar, and proteins in the blood stream. Outside of the body insulin is made through standard molecular biology techniques. The DNA coding for the insulin gene is expressed to produce insulin protein, which is purified and sold.

Insulin is made using bacteria like E. coli and some yeast. Use of amino-acid sequencing and large amounts of bacteria,DNA is inserted into the host and the bacteria allowed to grow. The bacteria capable to create a synthetic form of hormone, which is purified ina centrifuge or chromatography.
