A sed rate measures the amount of infection in your body. The normal range depends on your age. The older you are it tends to be higher.

For men, greater than 15 millimeters per hour, for women greater than 20 millimeters per hour. High sed rate can indicate lupus, cancer, kidney disease, infection or inflammation of joints.

A sed rate measures how much inflammation there is in your body. Ideally, that number would be near zero. If it goes over 100, however, you're in big trouble. A number that high indicates serious and possibly fatal health issues.
