How does space warp work?

Or, I guess, how would it work, if it did?

Nothing can go faster than light, but if you could bend the shape of space around you, you could reduce the distance needed and get there faster than light.

1. It would allow the ship to travel faster than light. OR 2. It would warp space so that the distance to be traveled is shorter than the many light years between points. (Like a worm hole)

If space warp did exist, it would probably involve loads of atoms travelling at the speed of light between one point and another. And you wouldn't know it happened!
