A fuel filter is similar to the working of a water filter. When fuel gushes into the filter, the impurities are deposited on the filter and pure fuel is allowed.

It works like a tea bag does. As the liquid fuel passes through, it stops any solid particles that may have gotten in, like rust or sediment from the gas tank or fuel lines.

It works similar to any other filter. A substance like air or a liquid is forced through a type of medium. Typically the medium is made of paper and in the case of a fuel filter cloth. The Medium has tiny little hole a specific sized design to only left fine particles through. This keeps debris out of the system.

It filters out impurities in the gasoline. This might include sediment like rust from the gas tank, or particles that found their way into the gas some other way. This helps keep those particles from clogging up the fuel injectors, which have very, very small openings
