A DVD burner uses LASER light to darken dye on a writable DVD. The sections darkened by the LASER have a different values than those that remain transparent.

DVD burners do not burn the disc they record a digit trail of data onto the surface of the disc that is later read by your DVD players laser.

Yes they really burn something, it doesnt look as good as it would if you bought it from the store, but its a whole lot cheaper in my opinion anyways.

They don't exactly burn. DVD burners use a laser to etch patterns and grooves onto the plastic. Lasers at lower intensities to read these patterns and grooves as data.
