Take one straw put it in your mouth exhale then take two straws put them in your mouth and exhale. It is easier to exhale with two straws and that is the same with a duel exhaust. A two bank engine such as a V-8 if piped into a Y - single has more back pressure.

Duel exhaust reduces back pressure in the system by allowing 4 or 3 cylinders to exhaust out of an individual side rather than having all of the cylinders (6 or 8) exhaust out of one exhaust port. Duel exhaust gives a slight increase to overall horsepower of a vehicle.

A "V" engine is divided into two halves. A v8 for example has two rows of 4 cylinders. A dual exhaust gives each row of cylinders its own exhaust pipe.

Dual systems works the same as single exhaust except it allows for more volume of gases to move through. It's like trying to exhale through two straw instead of one.
