It works similar to a gas engine but instead of lighting the fuel off with a spark plug diesel use very high pressure fuel and cylinder heat.

A diesel engine is similar in function to a typical gasoline internal combustion engine; however due to a higher compression ratio, the air fuel mixure in the cylinders ignites itself instead or requiring a spark from a spark plug.

The basics of any internal combustion engine is fuel is mixed with air, a spark ignites the mixture, forcing a piston to move and in turn driving the vehicle. Diesel engines do not use spark plugs like a gas engine does.

turbo compresses air, piston compresses it more, then injectors squirt diesel right into cylinder, the extreme compression and temperature ignites it. power stroke then exhaust stoke then repeat it all.
