Make sure your letter is phrased politely, tactfully and respectfully. Open the letter by stating facts that demonstrate your loyalty to the company (such as number of years worked, willingness to do over time) and your continued desire to serve the company in the best way. State your skills which you think would be used best if you were promoted.

You already seem to have the right idea. Just begin the letter in a respectful way, and list the reasons you think you deserve to be promoted. Then end the letter by saying "thank you for your consideration," and handle the corresponding news well either way.

Tell them your assests. What you bring to the company and the achievements you've accomplished for the company. Also let your boss know why you think you're deserving of the promotion and include how much of a promotion you'd be willing to accept. Present it in a clearly worded professional manner.
