Be sure to use sharp pruning shears (dull ones damage the stems) and have a vase with tepid or slightly warm water ready for the roses. Trim the stems at a 45 degree angle, about one-eighth of an inch from the bottom of the stem, add flower to water.

If you are trimming fresh cut roses, you want to cut the stem on a diagonal at least 1" from the bottom of the stem. If you are cutting canes on a living plant, cut any canes growing inwards at the first leaf node. This will keep the plant healthy.

You need to recut the stems as soon as you can, before putting them in a vase. This is because air has formed a vapor-lock in the stems. Fill a sink with warm water, and cut an inch or more off the stem with sharp shears, underwater, at an angle.

To trim rose stems find a bud upon the stem and cut about half an inch above it using a set of secateurs.

One should cut the ends of a rose at an angle, being sure to do so under water to make sure the stem will continue to take up water.

You trim the thorns off first, then you cut the bottom (or length you want) at a down ward angle.
