Cramp is thought to occur due to dehydration and a lack of sodium and potassium. The best treatment is prevention by drinking lots of water, electrolyte drinks and taking on salts by eating banannas or nuts. If cramp on sets you can do a series of stretchs to try and treat it.

Cramps when cycling can be best treated by immediate stretching. As the muscles begin to cramp, stop the bike and do any one of a variety of calf stretches. Also, drink plenty of water and eat snacks high in pottassium. If still riding and you can't pull over, stand up and drop your heel to stretch while coasting.
