How do you time a 3.8l engine?

I was told that I need to determine the timing of my engine in order to fix it.

The 3. 81 designator is meaningless. Year make, model and engine displacement of auto(? ) would need to be known for proper engine timing. This info will determine if your engine can be mechanically or electronically adjusted.

After receiving the timing information from a service manual attach a timing light to the #1 cylinder bring the RPM up to the designated speed to the #1 sparkplug wire.

To set the timing you need a timing light. First disable any ignition advance mechanism and loosen the distributor hold-down bolt. Then attach your light and start the car. Point the light at the timing mark and turn the distributor until it lines up to the proper mark.

Before starting connect your timing light and disconnect or deactivate the timing advance mechanism. Then start the engine and look for the timing mark on the crack with the light. Sometimes it helps to highlight the mark with a paint marker. Loosen and turn the distributor to move the mark to the right place. Then tighten it back down.
