How do you take care of foal hooves?

As your foal grows his feet will be constantly growing as well. Your horse will hit a growth spurt and they will need to be trimmed quite often. Don't try to trim your horses feet unless you are skilled and knowledgeable in this area. You could cause your horse to founder if it's done improperly.

The foal should be taught as soon after birth as possible about being handled, including lifting and rubbing each hoof. Tap on the foot to prepare the baby for future farrier work. Clean the hooves with a pick as necessary. Be gentle but firm while handling the foal.

You will need the blacksmith look at the hooves to see if they need filed or trimed up. A person needs to be at the head of the foal, they will get a little excited about this. Before a blacksmith comes it is important to pick up the hooves on the foal so he will know what to expect.
