How do you repair a Nissan Altima ignition cylinder?

The cylinder for my ignition is going bad and needs to be replaced or repaired, can I just repair it?

To replace an ignition cylinder it will require a special tool to remove the cylinder from the key switch. The tool is expensive and is cheaper to have it replaced.

I am assuming you are talking about the ignition switch cylinder. If that is the case then it needs to be replaced as it is a non repairable part. You can find a replacement at most of the major parts stores or your local dealer. Your local Nissan dealer may be able to rekey the replacement to the original key.

You can pick up a used cylinder from a junk yard and replace it easily. Unscrew the lug nuts holding the old cylinder in place and tighten the new one.

Depending on the year of your Nissan, if the tumblers and/or key are worn out in your ignition cylinder it may be less expensive and easier, overall to replace then entire system. One thing to consider, however, is that your door locks will use the original key so, do not throw it away.

One time my father's key broke in his ignition. He used a drill bit to drill the ignition out wich actualy started the car. Nw the car can be started a anytime with a flat screwdriver.
