How do you remove your old carpet?

Should you remove your carpet pad too?

It is easiest to remove carpet by taking a sharp carpet knife and cutting it to reasonable width strips (3-4 feet wide). It can then be pulled up. You will need to remove the pad too as it will be dirty and is cheap to replace. If it is nailed down you will want to pull them with a hammer.

Take a utility knife and go to town. Cut it up in 3 ft x 12 ft strips for easy carry out. The pad absolutely needs to come up if the carpet has been down more than five years. Padding has a finite lifespan, and is the backbone of any new carpet (keeps it looking newer longer)
