First remove the wheel. Next remove the brake pads. Once this is done, unhinge the drum brake by tapping it on the sides until it pops out.

For this procedure one must have a LARGE HEAVY hammer on hand. The rear drum must be persuaded off with a large amount of force. On some mercury sables (depending on the year) there will be a release mechanism found through a whole in the drum cover that requires a flat head screw driver to release it.

Remove it like any other car. Remove the wheel then remove the drum assembly. It may require a hammer to tap along the back edge to get it to slide off or you can turn the adjuster in.

Take out the brake line-to-axle retention bracket. Insert both a screwdriver and your spoon. Push the self adjuster to the side. Be sure to push along a straight line.
