Start by stripping the stain off. Use wood filler to fill any holes or imperfections. Sand the table several times each time using a more fine grit sandpaper until you have a smooth surface. Stain and seal.

The first step is to remove the old sealant by chemicals or sanding. Then sand down to clean wood. Stain it if desired and allow to dry. Then coat that with a quality sealant according to the directions. Sanding and buffing may be required for a perfect finish.

Use paint remover to take off old varnish or paint. Sand the table with fine grain sand paper and clean off all dust. Paint table with stain or paint of the desired color. If you stained the table, be sure to seal it with 2 to 3 coats of varnish to seal the paint. Replace any missing or damaged hardware.

In order to refinish a table, you need to first strip it of any existing paint or wood stain it might have. Then, prime and paint the table yourself, and cover it with a thinner to protect it from sun damage.
